In the car the other day, Jameson and I played a fun game – summing up our almost three years of marriage in music albums. We tend to play a whole album repeatedly throughout specific seasons, which makes it easy to create a nice chronological record of musical memories.

- Summer 2009 – Fleet Foxes, Self-titled album – Marriage and move out to Denver, Thunder Storms
- Fall 2009 – The Black Keys, Brothers – New apartment, New city, New Friends
- Winter 2009 – Fruit Bats, Mouthfuls – First snow storms and big move to little house
- Spring 2010 – Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca – Endless sun, New bikes, Rides around the park, Picnics
- Summer 2010 – Vampire Weekend, Contra – Summer in the city, Late night walks, Kitchen dance parties
- Winter 2010 – The Avett Brothers, I And Love And You – Long drives into the mountains, Winter boots, Electric Blankets
- Spring/Summer 2011 – Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues – Packing up home, Moving to Seattle
- Fall/Winter 2011 – Bon Iver, Self-titled album – Settling in Seattle, Working hard, Time with Family
- Spring – 2012 Damien Jurado, Maraqopa – Adoring the Pacific Northwest, Meeting friends, Growing closer to each other
This exercise left me feeling very thankful and nostalgic. Kind of a strange way to look at time, but whenever I put one of these albums on, my heart is flooded with specific memories, emotions, locations, foods, and faces.
What albums have left an impression on you?

What a great approach to marking the passage of time. I don’t know a single one of those albums, but, then again, I’m old. Alas.
Hugs,
Kathy
Uh, I love your life in music! Great choices! I have to check out a couple of these albums…
I love this self portrait. I don’t listen to as much music as I used too but this exercise would certainly be fun to do.
From early memories of singing with Annie to now.. It would be a lot to cover
I absolutely love that Fleet Foxes album, and Black Keys are always good :)
Now I want to check out the Fruit Bats!
It really is fun to see what the music highlights were for certain times of our lives. Soon as you hear anything older on the radio, it instantly takes you back to that time of your life and what you were doing. Music is very powerful isn’t it? We are going to a concert tonight in a super fun venue tonight, and I’m excited because I really love this band.
I’ve heard of them but my favorite would be Fleet Foxes! Such calming songs :)
Im very old or backwards regarding this music but it’ll be a personal journey I’ll take this summer~Fondly Deb
Oh, this is great. I wish I was more of an whole-album-listener than just songs and putting them into playlists. And I really like most of the albums you mentioned, although there are 3 that I don’t really… know.
such a great albums
What a great idea! I’m coming up on my first anniversary soon and it’s good to have this in mind. But I love that you and your husband would take the time to do this. Keeps the love alive and life interesting :)
Fun idea! Music has a great ability to capture our emotions, and take us right back to that exact season. Some of the albums you listed I listened to at the same time, but in Vietnam :) Fleetfoxes, Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, John Mark McMillan…each different houses and different seasons and it pulls my heart strings!
oooh I dont know any of these songs shame on me:))
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s ‘Deja Vu’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Nashville Skyline’ (the Dylan my dad listens to most; I grew up on that album.)
Also, ‘Brothers’ is the album we were listening to on our road trip to visit you in Denver.
